5 Things That Made Me Happy This Weekend

Holy moly... Where do I even start with this past weekend? I think I managed to cram in about five-times the activity of a normal weekend, due to having Mike AND a college friend in town. It's hard to narrow it down to just five things, but here are the highlights:

1. The best spicy margarita in San Diego

Guys, I'm not kidding about this one. After living in San Diego for almost 3.5 years, I know my way around a good margarita, and the Spicy Cucumber Margarita at Jake's in Del Mar is no joke (the house-made spicy syrup is the key differential here). After a long day at work, I was looking forward to slurping down one (or two...) of these all day. I highly, highly, recommend it. More info on Jake's to come.

2. Giant pandas!

Mike and I finally made our required couple date to the San Diego Zoo on Saturday! The forecast was a bit rainy, which made us all the more excited to go (less crowded? opportunity to wear our super cool raincoats?), but the weather cleared up beautifully by early afternoon. Overall we spent about six hours trekking around the zoo, with multiple stops at our two favorite respective exhibits (pandas and koalas). Expect an in-depth zoo blog post soon!

Fact: Pandas eat up to 30 pounds of food a DAY.

3. Sea lions on parade at the Cove

As is the routine when visitors come to town (or just whenever I feel like it), this weekend included a trip to La Jolla Cove to view the sea lions. Due to the rainy weather (on Saturday it rained, on Sunday it poured), there were considerably less of the little guys hanging out on the rocks, but for the first time ever, we witnessed them waddling up onto the beach! Sidenote: If there are sea lions on the beach, resist the urge to join them/get close enough to take a sea-lion-selfie. Poor form tourists we saw on Sunday, poor form.

4. Checked one off the Oscars "movies to watch" list

Every year when the Oscars roll around, it's the same charade: I've only actually seen about 10% of the movies that are nominated, and heard of about 50%. Then after awards-show season, I add a handful to my "movies to watch" list and hope for the best. On Sunday night, Mike and I rented "The Theory of Everything," starring Best Actor Oscar-winner (for the role) Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. After watching the movie (and not really knowing anything about Stephen Hawking prior), I can say that the Best Actor win was DESERVED. While I was pulled into the story, fascinated by Hawking's physical struggle and his intellectual victories, moreso I was enraptured by Redmayne's performance. Mike and I had different opinions on the overall execution of the film, but Redmayne's talent is undeniable. If you're in the mood for a heavier, yet uplifting movie, you should check out "The Theory of Everything."

5. Oh yeah, Mike was here

Hands down, the thing that made me happiest this weekend was that I got to spend it with Mike. Sadly, his trip has come to an end and he's flying back to Italy today, but the official countdown to his permanent return is now ON!

Getting weird (selfie time) at the Scripps Aquarium. Seriously, why is my face like that?

What are you still smiling about from this weekend?
